44 weeks, 310 days, that is 1711 pictures on 46 rolls of film. What do these numbers mean? So long did it take to rebuild the Spiral House, which I followed with my Leica camera day by day.

Spiral House 2.0. What does this title mean? What can it mean for us, the inhabitants of Újpalota? Spiral House reloaded?

The Spiral took a decisive place in my childhood too. As a schoolboy, I went to have lunch in Pajtás, which was upstairs at the time. I remember when I bought stamps from my pocket money in the branch of National Savings Bank on this spot. I won’t forget it either that I had my hair cut at the hairdresser’s here. I also know what it was like to ride a bike up and down the ramp of the Spiral. I lived my everyday life here. It seems as if it was just yesterday.

I attended the grammar school in another district of Budapest. We had parted company. I was studying. I was growing up. I became an architect. During these 25 years I didn’t really come into contact with the Spiral. We could do with an upgrade. In 2011 I started to work for the local government of district 15 of Budapest where we worked on reviving the Spiral House as part of a European Union programme. It was good to be together again and cherish hopes of a newer and better condition. I was following the project from the plans to end of the completion. By looking at my photos, we can experience the old building ceasing to exist and the new one being born. I used the objective of my camera very subjectively. 

In my opinion, the renewal of the Spiral House is at the same time the renewal of Újpalota. I am pleased to have taken part. In the meantime we have both become 40 years old. The building doesn’t look like it.

44 hét 310 nap, azaz 46 tekercs 1711 kép. Mit jelentenek ezek a számok? Ennyi ideig tartott a Spirálház átépítése, melyet hétről hétre nyomon követtem a Leica fényképezőgépemmel.

Spirálház 2.0. Mit jelent ez a cím? Mit jelenthet ez nekünk, újpalotaiaknak: Spirálház újratöltve?

Nekem is a gyermekkorom meghatározó helye a Spirál volt. Általános iskolásként én is nap, mint nap jártam az akkor még emeleti Pajtásba ebédelni. Emlékszem, amikor a zsebpénzemből itt az Országos Takarékpénztár fiókjában vettem bélyegeket. Nem felejtem el azt sem, hogy az itteni fodrászüzletben vágattam a hajam. S azt is tudom, milyen volt biciklizni a Spirál rámpán fel és alá. Itt éltem a mindennapjaimat. Mintha tegnap lett volna.

A gimnáziumi tanulmányaimat már nem a kerületben folytattam. Elváltak útjaink. Tanultam. Felnőttem. Építész lettem. És jött 25 év, amikor nem igazán találkoztam a Spirállal. Ránk fért egy kis frissítés. 2011-ben a XV. kerületi Önkormányzatnál kezdtem dolgozni, ahol egy Európai Uniós program keretében, a Spirálház újraélesztésén dolgoztunk. Jó volt újra együtt lennünk, s reménykedni egy újban, s jobban. Végigkísértem a projektet, a vázlattervektől a kivitelezés végéig. A fotóimon átélhetjük a megszűnő régit, s a megszülető újat. Nagyon szubjektíven használtam az objektívemet.

A Spirálház megújulása véleményem szerint Újpalota megújulása is egyben. Örömöt érzek, hogy ebben részt vehettem. Időközben mindketten negyvenesek lettünk. Az épületen ez nem látszik.
